Molecule
IFN-γ
Th1/NK cytokine that activates macrophage antimicrobial programmes.
Also called: IFN-γ, interferon-gamma, interferon-γ

In short
- 1What it is: a molecule in molecules and receptors.
- 2How it connects: acts on 2 and is affected by 4 concepts — mostly 4 cell, 2 disease.
- 3Where it sits: response on the 15-step immune chain.
What it does
Macrophage M1 activation → iNOS → NO → intracellular killing (TB defence); drives Th1 disease; adaptive immune resistance in cancer: TIL IFN-γ → JAK1/2 → STAT1 → PD-L1 upregulation on tumour (the tumour upregulates PD-L1 in response to the very T cells attacking it)
