Biomarker
C-reactive protein (CRP)
Acute-phase protein used as a systemic inflammation marker.
Also called: CRP, C-reactive protein

In short
- 1What it is: a biomarker in research methods.
- 2How it connects: acts on 1 and is affected by 3 concepts — mostly 1 pathway, 1 tissue, 1 disease.
- 3Where it sits: biomarker on the 15-step immune chain.
What it does
Acute phase reactant (IL-6-driven hepatic production); rises within 6-8h of inflammatory stimulus; falls rapidly with resolution; clinical TRAP: tocilizumab/sarilumab suppress CRP production (block IL-6R) → CRP cannot be used to monitor infection or inflammation in patients on IL-6R antagonists; hsCRP (high-sensitivity) used in CANTOS (>2mg/L → enrolled; fell with canakinumab confirming anti-IL-1β mechanism)
